"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can be their extra sister."

There's just one problem: The sender also desires to be Haim's newest recruit. What's more, we are not alone. A host of celebrated admirers have also coveted the position.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is happening. Sisters Este, Danielle and Alana started their path doing sets at small eateries with their family. Today, they are repeated Grammy nominees.

Similar to the best bands, they're a tight-knit trio. Their music videos frequently feature them walking in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. On stage, they play with such unfettered exuberance you can't help but think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"How often on tour that young girls approached us and said, 'After your show, I got a bass'," states Alana, the most junior of the trio. "That's the biggest honor. That is recognition in itself. Our mission is accomplished if we can encourage others to form a group."

"So anyone gets an invitation to be the honorary Haim sister."

Award Recognition

The trio have called into home, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're currently processing the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammys – with Haim the first female band ever in consideration for the trophy.

"I follow the nominations every year, so it almost feels like a surreal movie when your name is read out," explains Alana. "I needed to phone my sisters to say, 'Did we just hear this right or am I dreaming'?"

The significance of the accolade is deeply felt by the trio.

"We truly set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a significant milestone," says Alana. "However we're just grateful for the female artists that paved the way."

Personal Turmoil and Candor

The record came out of a period of transition. All three sisters were single, and the music captures that unique in-between place where you're happy to be free, but not entirely ready to start anew.

The lyrics track breakups and goodbyes. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real time who they are becoming.

"I adore summary, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to make an effort in blocking the criticism and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Development of Style

That newfound toughness called for a different sonic direction – more unpolished and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who worked on producing the album, that started with the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our biography," laughs Alana. "I've said it, our albums don't start until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Collective Humor

The band's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

A former partner broke up with Este over a health consideration. Alana recalled a story of flying to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's only darkness," says Alana. "Therefore to be able to share those stories and have them tell you even crazier stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. Now, Haim are more certain of their position in the industry.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an worldwide audience.

But the sister act will forever be their number one priority.

"My sisters and I have been making music since I was little," concludes Alana. "There is no alternative that we were destined for. And I'm really fortunate we've reached this point and we're still kicking."
