A Pledge to Address Youth Demands Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life. "Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the deal was signed. The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics. Terms of the Fresh Political Agreement According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the position of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March. Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing broad discontent with the country's established political leadership. He has previously served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case related to alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime. Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that took over after the ousted administration was dissolved. Broader Political Consultations Underway In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister recently held meetings with several major political leaders. These discussions involved former prime ministers and the heads of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the time of the uprising. After these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The statement affirmed the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free environment for the electoral process, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
