The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k award prize money to the MVT, which works to preserve the UK's small music venues.

He was awarded the award on mid-October as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to donate the funds to the trust, in recognition of the crucial part small stages fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I played around the region, and further afield, when I was beginning," remarked Sam Fender. "These locations are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the Music Venues Trust in its initiatives to keep the scene afloat, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits independent venues.

He also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help numerous local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were confronting possible closure due to difficulties arising from floods, fires and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, legal disputes and sound issues.

Additional spaces obtained financial assistance in improving infrastructure and gear that helped artists and audiences.

"The idea that funds from performances in large arenas helps the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just logical," Fender has said.

He is among several artists to contribute his Mercury Prize funds to good deeds.

When they received the award in 1996 for their release the album, lead singer Jarvis Cocker declared that the band would give their winnings to the organization War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer she shared her award among multiple charities, including the children's charity and a Sickle Cell organization.

"And I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they lacked better apparatus," the artist told the media.

Previously, Ezra Collective donated their funds to the youth organization that developed their act, alongside other local music groups.

Additionally the 1994 recipients M People contributed their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was diagnosed the illness.

"Receiving the award was ample," said artist Small. "The prize was the extra but we didn't need the cherry, because we had the honor. So our success affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the trust revealed it had rescued several local spots in the South East, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in that area and the second in Bristol were acquired under the community ownership program, which is supported by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
