Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in the ninth month and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under confinement pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments came to light.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a supporters' gathering that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Escape Risks

In a document approving the arrest, the magistrate said intelligence from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the electronic ankle bracelet to secure accomplishment in his escape.

This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His child, Flávio, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his followers near his father's house to take place on Saturday night.

Details of Guilty Verdict

The former president was found guilty of leading a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a plot which encompassed plans to kill the current president and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The plot was prevented because it failed to get the support of the army and air force commanders. His successor was sworn in without incident on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on 8 January, many his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.

The police intervened and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.

The judges found that the rioters had been provoked by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.

At the time, his attorneys called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.

The former president called the court case a targeted investigation" and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the next presidential race.
