British Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, identified by reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of entry passages down to the facility... preliminary assessments indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no evidence of any harm to civilians in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any re-emergence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

UK warplanes have performed overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to every member of our armed forces participating in this operation for their skill and their valour," he said. "Including them were thousands of British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This operation, to take out dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
