A bettor made nearly half a million dollars from wagers on the downfall of Venezuela's president just before it was officially announced, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from inside knowledge of the US operation.

Sudden Shift in Predictions

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that Nicolás Maduro would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the hours before former President Trump announced on Saturday that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which registered on the site in December and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, earned over $nearly half a million from a modest bet of over $32,000.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Announcement

Market statistics shows that traders put the odds of Maduro's exit at just 6.5% in the afternoon of the prior Friday.

However the market's assessment had increased to eleven percent by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of Saturday, indicating a sudden change in market sentiment right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a transaction based on non-public details," commented an industry expert.

Several of other individuals also made tens of thousands of dollars from predicting the capture.

Legal Questions Emerges

Some lawmakers are starting to take note.

Proposed legislation presented on Monday seeks to ban government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "insider details" related to a bet.

Market Background

Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with users able to predict everything from sports outcomes to current affairs.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the current presidency.

Trading on insider information is against the law in the traditional financial markets, but there are less oversight in the event betting arena.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "has clear rules against insider trading of any form."
